Is this the Solstice that changes everything?

Dear Reader.

It's Solstice this Friday, and with everything going on in my life and the world, I am so looking forward to my retreat ritual that I've practiced over a decade now: I go offline and reflect on these 4 questions:

In this process, I aim to reconnect with Source and be radically open and present to what is trying to emerge through me.

I also aim to root into fierce compassion... meaning: If I take a plain look at what's present, I may hear confirmations, or I may discern that everything I've thought and done so far is no longer in alignment; and can I lovingly be with myself in that?

This Solstice feels different

Do you feel it, too?

A friend and I were saying that it reminds us of that experience of knowing and pre-grieving for a long time that a Beloved is dying, or a relationship or phase of life is ending, but when the end comes, it still HUGE.

Because what has been (and been familiar or comfortable) is ending. It's disorienting: We are forced to ask: Who am I now? Who are "we" now?

If we grapple with all this, then something new is possible. If we avoid it, we suffer.

That's what this Solstice is about for me.

Cuz I saw in the early 90s that our dominant systems are not viable and therefore, collapse will come, and yet as these polycrises unfold, I'm feeling it every much as you are.

In these threshold times, so many more of us are seeing that everything is changing around us (and needs to change! and has needed to change for a loooong time). And, most of us still have to go to work, and pay rent, and buy groceries to nurture our families.

It can feel crazy-making.

I recently published an article about my own long journey of straddling these two realities and struggling with the agonizing double binds they create.

But it isn't a work memoir.

Ultimately, it's an invitation.

To be radically present to these and other questions:

What is present?

  • What double binds can you illuminate in your life?
(This might give you some relief: In the article I point out that these are not personal failings, but point to the unworkability of the current systems, and illuminating the double binds you face can diminish their power over you. Especially related to how we think about work.)

What can be released?

  • Is the daily grind (and lack of systemic support to metabolize the mind/body/soul grief nowadays) pulling you away from being with yourself and the many endings unfolding in the world?
  • How do our outdated conceptions of Work contribute to the double binds and polycrises?
  • What even is the meaning of work in the midst of death and bEarth on the planetary scale?

What can be honored?

  • What is now possible for us now, precisely because we are in threshold times?

What can be?

  • What if, in the midst of converging polycrises, you (and We) can be more powerful than ever? But it might require you to upend everything you've thought about work.
  • Are you willing to take a plain look at all this?
  • And lovingly be with yourself in all that?

This Solstice, consider taking my article with you into reflection.

(That's my friend link so it's not behind a paywall on Medium. It invites you into several phases of reflection. It's a whole vibe.)

Dear Ones, Many of you said my email from last week LANDED, especially where I spoke to these threshold times that we are living in: "We live in a f'd up economy when people are literally getting paid bonuses to build better bombs, obfuscate justice, forcibly abduct and disappear people, exploit workers more efficiently, and, and, and... (sadly, we could fill in the blanks here for days and not be finished)." Today I want to invite you to feel somatically into the metaphor around living and...

Dear Reader. We live in a f'd up economy when people are literally getting paid bonuses to build better bombs, obfuscate justice, forcibly abduct and disappear people, exploit workers more efficiently, and, and, and... (sadly, we could fill in the blanks here for days and not be finished). And therefore it's understandable that some days, it's just hard to metabolize all that is happening. It's painful that too many people's daily work is eroding our communities and beautiful living world. In...

Dear Reader, I've connected with many badass women working in permaculture. One is Kendra, CEO of LadyBug EarthCare. Kendra started her biz years ago and it took off, exploded basically. That's a good problem to have, right? Because so many women I talk to have the opposite problem: they start a biz and don't find eager customers and their biz limps along. Well, Kendra and I connected because trying to keep up with her business growth and ALL the THINGS as a biz owner in a new field had...
